Congratulations to Mercer athlete Ona Ruiz who placed fourth in the state track meet in La Crosse on Saturday, June 1. Ona qualified for the state track meet in the triple jump with a jump of 35'2" beating the school record and placing 3rd in the sectional meet at Cameron. At the state meet in La Crosse, Ona surpassed her previous school record by jumping 35' 5 1/2". Way to go Ona!
The amazing part of this story is that Ona never participated in track before this season. As a foreign exchange student from Spain, Ona came to Mercer as an experienced basketball player. Just weeks before the track postseason, Ona tried out the triple jump. With support from coaches, D'kota Engler and Robyn Schoeneman, Ona quickly caught on and became the best triple jumper in Mercer School history.
